How long have you been a driving instructor for?

I have been a driving instructor for over 14 years, qualifying in 2004.

What were you doing before that?

I was working in public transport before that, driving both busses and trams around the Blackpool area for over 18 years!

What do you enjoy most about driving instructing?

It is a very different job to bus driving, but it is a job that I enjoy immensely. There are lots of aspects about the job that I could list here, but, without a doubt, my favourite part of the job, to this day, is seeing the pleasure on my pupils faces after they have passed their driving test. Its such a massive milestone in their lives, and it feels great to have helped them to achieve that.

Is there anything you dislike about the job?

As I said, it is a job that I really enjoy, so there isn’t much really to write in here. Late cancellations are always annoying, but after 14 years, you learn to deal with that. One thing that does still frustrate me is the attitude that some drivers have towards learner drivers. Most road users are courteous and considerate, but, all too regularly we encounter people with a really aggressive attitude. Whilst I appreciate that it can be annoying when a learner makes a mistake, or stalls, revving the engine or beeping the horn, will never hep a situation. A lot of learners are very nervous already, and it be a real challenge calming them down again after they encounter that. Some people are very quick to forget that we’ve all been through that journey of learning to drive, and it can be very daunting at the start.

What are your interests/hobbies outside of driving instructing?

I like to keep fit, and get to the gym as often as I can. Some weeks that can be easier than others, and I enjoy spending time with wife. On top of that, I started playing golf a couple of years ago, and that is something I am really enjoying. I wouldn’t say I’m a great golfer, but I’m definitely getting better, currently playing off a handicap of 13.
